With the onset of periods, women experience various other body changes. One of these changes is the change in skin conditioning which leads to breakage and acne during periods. To control these skin problems, a few steps need to be followed.
Also, during different phases of the menstrual cycle due to fluctuations in hormones a variety of skin problems arise, that need to be addressed individually.
Menstruation
It is the stage where you experience your period. During this stage, there is a visible dullness in women’s skin due to a decrease in the levels of estrogen and progesterone. Also, there is an increase in prostaglandin which causes the skin to be more sensitive.
So, during menstruation hydration and moisturization are the keys. It is recommended to drink plenty of water which helps in flushing out toxins and maintains skin elasticity.
Along with this using a good moisturiser that doesn’t block the skin's pores is also recommended.
Follicular Phase
In the follicular phase, the estrogen and progesterone levels start rising again, and the skin starts retaining moisture. Thus the skin seems more hydrated and luminous.
During the follicular phase, a light routine of skin care needs to be followed. Women need to use a light exfoliator to remove dead skin cells.
Also, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect the skin from harmful UV radiation.
Skincare products with antioxidants such as vitamin C are also recommended during ovulation.
Ovulation
Following the follicular phase ovulation starts when the estrogen and testosterone are at their peak, which causes a spike in luteinizing hormone. This makes the skin prone to bacterial overgrowth leading to oily skin.
To counter this women need to use products that are less oily and also control oil content on the skin, and clean their makeup while resting.
Luteal Phase
When the luteal phase of the menstruation cycle starts, the levels of estrogen drop and progesterone rise. This makes the skin’s barrier function go lower and makes the skin more prone to bacterial breakouts or acne.
So, during this phase, it is optimal to hydrate and use a gentle skincare routine as the skin may be sensitive, and harsh methods might irritate the skin.
Along with these simple skincare and body care routines, women should practice the following practices daily irrespective of any phases to keep their skin and body healthy during periods.
- Healthy Diet: To promote better skin health diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids is needed to be consumed.
- Regular exercise improves blood circulation and improves skin health, so a healthy exercise regimen is also needed to be adopted.
- Getting adequate sleep is also crucial for skin regeneration and repair.
- A stress-free life is also needed for better skin health so adopt activities such as meditation or yoga.
It is essential to remember that everyone’s skin is different and with different needs. So, find a skincare routine that caters to your skin’s needs if skin problems prolong.
